Latest trends in film production design

by

As a Production Designer or Art Director, I’ve seen many trends come and go in the field of film production design.

From classic Hollywood glamour to modern minimalism, each era has its own distinct aesthetic.

Today, I’m excited to share with you some of the latest trends and innovations in the field of film production design and how they’ve been used in recent projects.

Sustainability

One of the most significant trends in the film industry is the shift towards sustainability. In recent years, filmmakers have become increasingly conscious of their environmental impact and have taken steps to reduce it.

From using eco-friendly materials for set design to using electric vehicles on set, there are many ways that film production can become more sustainable. In my recent work, I’ve been incorporating recycled materials into set design to create a unique look that is also environmentally friendly.

Realism

Another trend that I’ve noticed in recent years is a move towards realism in film production design. Instead of relying heavily on computer-generated effects, filmmakers are looking for ways to create practical effects that feel more tangible and realistic.

This trend can be seen in recent projects which relied on natural lighting and practical effects to create a stunningly realistic visual experience.

Retro

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in retro design.

From 80s neon to 70s psychedelia, filmmakers are exploring the visual language of the past and bringing it into the present.

This trend can be seen in projects like Stranger Things, which uses retro-inspired set design and cinematography to transport viewers back in time.

Immersive Environments

Finally, there is a trend towards creating immersive environments that engage the viewer on a deeper level.

This trend can be seen in projects like Blade Runner 2049, which features stunning set design and lighting that creates a fully realized and immersive world.

As a Production Designer, I’m always looking for ways to create environments that transport viewers into the story and allow them to fully engage with the narrative.

Final thoughts

The field of film production design is constantly evolving, with new trends and innovations emerging all the time. Whether it’s a move towards sustainability, a focus on realism, a resurgence of retro design, or the creation of immersive environments, there is always something new and exciting happening in the industry.

As a Production Designer or Art Director, it’s my job to stay on top of these trends and find ways to incorporate them into my work to create visually stunning and engaging projects.
